American Theater

The New Victory Theater has announced its 2018-19 New Victory LabWorks Artists. The LabWorks program provides New York City-based artists with resources and support to develop new works for family audiences.

The selected artists and companies are encouraged to make works that challenge preconceptions commonly held about theatre for young audiences. The LabWorks Artists will receive a stipend, and will be offered rehearsal space at the New 42nd Street Studios. In addition, the LabWorks Artists will receive technical assistance and professional development opportunities including workshops, master classes, and networking events. This year LabWorks Artists will develop a wide range of works, including:

Opera and musical theatre composer Faye Chiao (To See the Stars, 2017 OPERA America Female Composer Discovery Award) and playwright Anton Dudley (Letters to the End of the World, 2012 Lambda Literary Award Finalist) will blend contemporary storytelling with classical forms to build the musical universe of Baba Yaga and the Firebird.

Peabody alum Faye Chiao to perform Hubble-inspired work at Artscape Chiao's 'To See the Stars' among several Peabody performances at annual arts festival

July 12, 2016
To those familiar with her work, it's no surprise that Peabody Institute alum Faye Chiao (MM '07, DMA '16, Composition) will perform at this year's space-themed Artscape festival.

This is a composer who, after winning the Presser Music Award last year, chose to create a chamber work celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope, staging performances in planetariums.

‘utopia parkway’ at Single Carrot Theatre

March 28, 2015
Single Carrot's Utopia Parkway is a delightfully refreshing evening of musical ritual theatre, Mee’s lyrics are fresh and Chiao’s tunes only elevate them. One is reminded of children on the playground singing and romping around with dance-like movements, using the various levels of the set to great effect. Their rhythms are infectious and serve to heighten the feeling of ritual reenactment.

And that is, after all is said and done, what Utopia Parkway is: a ritual yearning for a better world.

Tim Smith, The Baltimore Sun

"The composer has crafted an effective pastiche that coverse assorted pop genres, and has provided vivid instrumentation that, especially in percussive underlining of key lines of text, evokes something of Chinese opera."

Buonaiuto was featured in Faye Chiao's "Moments Colores," four songs filled with lush images of nature, antiquity and absinthe and treated in an intriguing, cabaret-inflected style (waltz rhythms are deftly exploited). Buonaiuto handled the assignment, which includes some mild sprechgesang in a nod to Schoenberg, with finesse and charm. Chiao's instrumental writing, often exquisitely misty in coloring reached a Poulenc-like richness at the end.
